Queen Street Warehouse

Pub eats, bar food and essentially cheap eats are a delicacy to be found within any downtown area. Foodie utopia brings to you a fine treat which can be found on (of course) Queen Street – the Queen Street Warehouse.

Warehouse is known by many, both those living in the city and those outside, for their famous $4.95 menu options – with some additional charges (which don’t range more than $2) added if you have some extras to your meal. This restaurant originated from Vancouver’s entertainment district and has established itself in Toronto as one of the most popular restaurants for taste, atmosphere and friendly service.

I’ve heard plenty about Warehouse from my friends, but with school and conflicting schedules I didn’t have many opportunities to reach this joint with the proper company. After a rather fun excursion with my partner to Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada – we were famished after burning all our excitement at the aquarium and wanted to eat something to re-energize. What was a better opportunity to hit up Queen Street Warehouse, than that moment?! That’s how we ended up going that day.

Due to popularity, there was a lineup outside the Warehouse, so future visitors beware. We did come at a bit of an odd hour – I believe it was around 2pm when we arrived at Warehouse, so we were pretty close to the front when we arrived. However, despite long line ups Warehouse has a great system which proved efficient – the moment customers left the premises, the tables were cleaned within minutes in order to welcome the next guests.

We managed to get a table for 2 within 10-15 minutes; considering the large density of patrons coming in and out it was quite quick. We were handed a menu and got our choices from the $4.95 menu. The waitress did warn us that there would be a little bit of a wait, but it was okay because my company and I just got to enjoy each other and share our excitement from the aquarium excursion, as well as the excitement to have a new blog post for foodie utopia! However, foodie utopians, if you’re in a bit of a rush – Warehouse may not be the greatest option. It’s great if you have some time off and have the option to relax a bit with great company.

Soon enough, our orders came out all at one time, so we could enjoy our lunch together. Above was my order, which was the Baja Fish Tacos. In the tacos were light cerveza battered white fish, roasted red pepper, chipotle mayo, sweet roasted corn salsa, shredded cabbage and cilantro served in soft tortillas. On the side, I added some guacamole for an addition $1.95. For the price that it retailed for, this was definitely a treat. I think that it’s difficult to find a decent taco in downtown – if your tastes are a bit more sophisticated than your fast food Taco Bell. The Baja Fish Tacos were a delight and were pretty comparable to my taco experience at other good places. I ended up eating all three tacos with deep satisfaction

Beside me, my company got himself the Works Burger with Warehouse Poutine. This was also another $4.95 item on the menu. The Works Burger had premium alberta beef, maple bacon, cheddar, crispy onions, macho sauce, and shredded lettuce in a toasted brioche bun. His Warehouse Poutine were peppered fries along with maple bacon, cheese curds and gravy. On his account, the food was very delicious and he managed to eat his meal with much vigor.

Overall, the visit to Warehouse was a satisfying one. Queen Street Warehouse definitely lives up to its reputation with friendly service and great tasting food for great prices. The ambiance was very bright because all the windows were open for the great summer weather, and the restaurant was packed with customers. I would definitely make a point to go back here again, whether its with a group of friends or with the same company I’ve went with the first time around. Either way, I know that Queen Street Warehouse will not disappoint!
